Dr. Phil has over twenty five years experience with Anheuser Busch and was Chairman of Anheuser Busch China from 1996 to 2002.
Under Phil’s management, Budweiser became the leading foreign premium beer brand in China with volumes increasing from 40,000 to 1.7 million hectoliters and segment share increasing to over 50%. Additionally, unit margins tripled and a previously stalled business was invigorated. This transformed China into the largest market in the world for Budweiser outside of North America.
Phil also negotiated the increased Anheuser Busch stake in the Bud Wuhan joint venture from 80% to 97%. During this time he developed and managed a network of 35 branch offices, 67 wholesalers and 800+ employees. Phil was also responsible for developing and implementing Budweiser’s successful marketing strategy.
Aside from managing the core Budweiser business in China, Phil also facilitated the Anheuser-Busch equity investment in Tsingtao Beer. He opened negotiation channels, built high-level relationships, and actively participated in the negotiations. Phil established the Anheuser-Busch liaison office in Qingdao, initiated the best practice exchange program, and played an advisory role in developing an A-B/Tsingtao acquisition strategy.
In the Asia Pacific region, Phil played a central role in Budweiser’s operations and business development. He increased profits for license agreements in Japan and Korea, made key decisions to exit unprofitable areas, and developed market entry strategies for Vietnam and Australia.
